I’ve been posting too many new songs lately that I didn’t get a chance to write about songs that I felt were more appropriate to my life right now. The song today is one of the classics of Korean indie, and it’s also one of the first couple of songs that really got me into this whole genre.
I guess the beauty of a song comes from the countless ways it can be interpreted, not just by different people, but even by the same person. Meanings of songs can, and most often time does, change over time. While people usually know of 가끔 미치도록 네가 안고 싶어질 때가 있어 (Sometimes I Want to Hug You Like Crazy) as a love/romance song, Bobby Chung wrote the piece following his brother’s death, starting with the question “What if you were still here” and reminiscing the then average days he got to spend together with his brother. Knowing such background story changes the entire meaning of this song.
I must admit, I rarely gave songs any meaning until recently. Other than that one Japanese song from an outro of an anime I have yet to remember, songs were nothing more than simple beats and melody. Since I don’t know when, however, I began to pay attention to the lyrics and these lyrics began to form specific images or feelings. The same applied to this song, as when I listened to it for the first time couple years back, neither the romance nor the brother interpretation meant anything. Now when I listen to this song, I think of someone. Someone I miss. Someone who, behind her timid tears, said “Sometimes, all I want is a hug.”
